Preserve Nigeria’s Unity to Honour Fallen Heroes, Abiodun Urges Citizens

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on Nigerians to work together to uphold the unity and indivisibility of the nation as a lasting tribute to the memory of fallen heroes. 

Speaking during the Special Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony to commemorate the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of preserving Nigeria’s integrity.

He noted that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day provides a solemn occasion to honor those who laid down their lives to defend the nation against both external and internal threats. 

"We honour them not only for making the ultimate sacrifice but also for the loved ones they have left behind, including their widows and widowers," the governor stated.

Abiodun highlighted the need for Nigerians to keep the memory of these heroes alive beyond the designated day of January 15, urging citizens to integrate their remembrance into daily life. 

"We should strive to commemorate their contributions every day, showing love and support to those they have left behind. Many of these individuals simply need to know that we care," he said.

Stressing the critical role of unity, the governor asserted, "We must also do everything to ensure that this nation called Nigeria remains one and indivisible. That is another way we can show them love and appreciation—that all the sacrifices they made for this nation were not in vain."

The ceremony featured symbolic activities, including the release of doves as a representation of peace and the laying of wreaths. 

Governor Abiodun was joined by the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, the Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, paramount rulers, the Commissioner of Police, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, the Commandant of the 35 Artillery Brigade, representatives of the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, and a widow of one of the fallen heroes.

The governor reaffirmed his belief in Nigeria’s potential for greatness, calling on all citizens to support government efforts at all levels to maintain peace and stability.

 "Together, we can ensure that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes are not in vain and that Nigeria thrives once again," he concluded.
