Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Monday formally presented the certificate and staff of office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Owoade. The event took place at the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan.
While addressing the gathering, Governor Makinde expressed optimism that Oba Owoade would bring progressive leadership to the Alaafin stool. “Today marks the beginning of a new era in Oyo's history as we officially crown Oba Abimbola Owoade as the Alaafin of Oyo. I have no doubt that his reign will bring peace, unity, and development to Oyo and beyond,” Makinde stated.
The appointment of Oba Owoade was announced last Friday, following approval by the state government. He succeeds the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away two years ago after a historic 52-year reign.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade pledged to uphold the cultural heritage of Oyo and ensure the kingdom continues to thrive. “This is a sacred responsibility, and I am committed to preserving the legacies of my forebears while fostering innovation and unity among our people,” the new Alaafin said.
The event witnessed the attendance of traditional rulers, government officials, and prominent indigenes of Oyo State, who described the installation as a step forward in consolidating the rich history and traditions of the Alaafin throne.
