Tax Reform Here to Stay, Says Tinubu During Media Chat

• Declares Tax Reform Irreversible, Open to Negotiations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the ongoing tax reform, describing it as a necessary step to broaden Nigeria’s tax net and ensure inclusive development.

Speaking during a presidential media chat aired by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Monday night, Tinubu declared that the reforms are "here to stay" despite facing opposition from some Northern leaders, governors, and lawmakers.

“The tax reform is here to stay. The reform is pro-poor and is aimed at widening the tax net so we can have more people paying,” Tinubu explained. “The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done.”

The tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly have sparked widespread debate, with many criticizing the potential impact on already strained economic conditions. In response to the pushback, legislators have initiated consultations to address concerns raised by stakeholders.

Acknowledging the opposition, Tinubu expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue to refine the proposed reforms. “Tax matters are subjects of debates and negotiations. I don’t mind cutting edges. I will,” he assured.
