House of Reps Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga, Dies at 59


The House of Representatives has announced the death of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, who represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. She passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

In a statement signed by the House of Representatives Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Onanuga’s demise was described as a profound loss to the nation. 

"Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga was a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for her constituents. Her contributions to the legislature and Nigeria at large will not be forgotten," the statement read.

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga, popularly called "Ijaya," was first elected to the House in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). 

During her first term, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she spearheaded initiatives to advance gender equality and social welfare programs.

Following her re-election in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip, a position in which she demonstrated unwavering commitment to parliamentary discipline and legislative progress. 

Her leadership style and dedication to service earned her the admiration of colleagues, constituents, and political observers alike.

“Rt. Hon. Onanuga’s intellect, humility, and determination stood out,” the House spokesman noted. “Her passion for building a better Nigeria was reflected in her every effort.”

The House of Representatives expressed condolences to her family, friends, and the people of Ogun State, particularly her constituents. 

The statement also highlighted her enduring legacy of service, which will inspire future generations of leaders.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
