Governor Ademola Adeleke has pledged his administration’s unwavering support for the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms in the livestock sector, describing the initiative as timely and transformative.
The governor made this commitment during an advocacy visit by the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, led by former INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega.
The meeting, held at the Executive Council Chambers in Osogbo, highlighted Osun State’s readiness to align with the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance food production and security nationwide.
In a statement issued by the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, Governor Adeleke lauded the Federal Government’s focus on agriculture.
He affirmed that Osun is prepared to leverage its abundant resources to become a key contributor to the nation’s food supply.
"My administration is irrevocably committed to any initiative by the Federal Government that will put more food on the tables of Nigerians. We are not leaving any stone unturned in adopting this idea. For instance, my government recently procured 31 tractors to empower farmers and boost food sufficiency in Osun," Adeleke stated.
The governor also highlighted other initiatives, including the distribution of seedlings and agricultural incentives, which are being implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
"Osun is enormously endowed with arable land and forests. When fully harnessed, these resources will not only ensure food security but also create job opportunities for Osun people and Nigerians as a whole. I am fully committed to the Federal Government's vision and will soon establish a committee of agricultural experts to design a comprehensive plan for livestock reforms in Osun," Adeleke added.
Earlier, Professor Jega, co-chairman of the Presidential Livestock Initiative Reforms Committee, outlined the committee’s objectives.
He urged the governor to consider establishing a dedicated Ministry of Livestock or an agency to oversee the sector’s development.
"We appeal to Governor Adeleke to back this initiative with enabling legislation through the Osun State House of Assembly. Additionally, engaging critical stakeholders and creating public awareness on the importance of livestock reforms are key to ensuring success," Jega remarked.
