MAPOLY Students Attack Ogun Deputy Governor’s Convoy During Protest

The convoy of the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, narrowly escaped an attack on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, during a protest by students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, the state capital.

A statement released by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, explained that the Deputy Governor was on her way to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, to represent the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration when the incident occurred.

The students, armed with sticks and other dangerous objects, blocked the Deputy Governor’s convoy and refused to allow it to pass. The situation escalated when the protesters identified the convoy as belonging to the Deputy Governor, prompting them to become more aggressive.

Security operatives and police officers made efforts to calm the protesters, but the students attempted to attack, damaging vehicles and injuring some security personnel in the process.

To prevent further escalation, the Deputy Governor’s convoy made an immediate detour to her lodge, allowing the students to continue their protest peacefully before she proceeded to the event.

According to Mr. Akinmade, “Contrary to reports circulating in the media, the Deputy Governor’s convoy did not provoke the protesters. However, some security operatives were injured, and vehicles were damaged while trying to maintain peace and order. The decision to make a detour was taken to de-escalate the situation.”

The state government has called for calm while urging security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of all parties involved.
