Edo PDP Slams Governor, Assembly Over LG Chairmen Suspension

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently condemned the suspension of all 18 Local Government Chairmen in the state, describing the move as illegal and unconstitutional.

The suspension, which was carried out by the State House of Assembly on Tuesday, reportedly followed a directive from Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, the PDP criticized the action, declaring it "null and void" while accusing the governor and the Assembly of disregarding both constitutional provisions and judicial rulings.

“The illegal suspension is a blatant violation of the recent ruling delivered by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, as well as the Supreme Court’s verdict, which reaffirms the autonomy and independence of local governments as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The PDP questioned the rationale behind the governor’s directive, especially when local government officials are constitutionally empowered to function independently.

“How can a governor instruct the State Assembly to suspend democratically elected chairmen of the 18 councils on the grounds of insubordination when the Constitution clearly states that local government councils enjoy autonomy and are not subordinates to the governor, State Assembly, or any other arm of government?” Aziegbemi queried.

The party further criticized the Assembly for failing to provide the suspended chairmen and their vice chairmen an opportunity to defend themselves, calling the charges “trumped-up” and “baseless.”

“It is worrisome that these officials were denied a fair hearing and were suspended without due process, in clear violation of constitutional principles,” the PDP added.

Reiterating its position on the supremacy of the Constitution, the PDP called the suspension a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law.

“The Speaker and members of the Edo State House of Assembly have overstepped their constitutional boundaries with this action. We urge them to immediately reverse this illegal suspension in the interest of democratic governance and respect for the rule of law.”

The party directed the suspended chairmen and their deputies to resume their official duties at their respective council offices without delay.

“We hereby direct all the council chairmen and vice chairmen to return to their offices tomorrow and continue with their normal duties,” the statement instructed.

Additionally, the PDP called on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to intervene and rein in Governor Okpebholo.

“We invite the Attorney General to call the Edo State governor-select to order. His actions not only undermine the Constitution but also pose a threat to peace and security within the state.”
