Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, has disbursed N1.9 billion to elderly citizens nationwide as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS). At the programme’s second edition, a total of 250 beneficiaries in each of the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and among military veterans received N200,000 each.
Addressing the beneficiaries during the event, Senator Tinubu encouraged them to prioritize their health while cherishing moments with their families. She emphasized that the initiative was established to reassure elderly citizens of their significance in society, particularly during the festive season.
“This scheme is aimed at ensuring that our elderly citizens, aged 65 and above, feel valued and supported,” Tinubu stated. “The Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative has increased the grant from N100,000 to N200,000 this year to provide further relief during this festive period.”
According to a statement from her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the programme is being implemented simultaneously in all states, the FCT, and among veterans under the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
The First Lady disclosed, “A total of N1.9 billion will be distributed across the nation, with each state and the FCT receiving N50 million for the initiative. Out of this, N200,000 has been allocated to each beneficiary. Additionally, free medical check-ups and essential items are being provided to the elderly.”
She reiterated her husband’s dedication to uplifting Nigerians: “President Bola Tinubu remains steadfast in his commitment to the well-being of all citizens, and this programme is a testament to that.”
In his remarks, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, praised the First Lady for her consistent efforts in supporting vulnerable groups, particularly veterans and their families. He also announced additional support for military veterans.
“While 250 elderly citizens are being supported through RHIESS, the Ministry of Defence will further assist an additional 250 veterans with N200,000 each,” Matawalle said.
He urged Nigerians to rally behind the Tinubu administration, which, according to him, inherited numerous challenges but is already making progress. “The signs of positive change are evident, and there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” Matawalle added.
The programme, held across all states and the FCT, included free medical check-ups and the distribution of food supplies to the elderly.
