President-elect Donald Trump plans to sign two sweeping executive orders shortly after his swearing-in, signaling a major shift in U.S. federal policies on gender recognition and diversity.
According to senior White House officials, the orders aim to end what the administration describes as “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and enforce the recognition of only two sexes: male and female.
“These actions are part of the incoming administration’s ‘restoring sanity’ agenda,” one official disclosed during a phone call on Monday, adding that the measures are designed to “defend women from gender ideology extremism and restore biological truth to the federal government.”
One of the orders will mandate the exclusive use of the term "sex" rather than "gender" in federal documentation and policies. This directive extends to agencies like the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, requiring that official government documents such as passports and visas reflect only biological sex.
The policy also aims to restrict taxpayer funds from being used for gender-transition healthcare while ensuring “privacy in intimate spaces” in federal facilities such as prisons, migrant shelters, and rape crisis centers.
The Trump campaign frequently emphasized these views during the election, with targeted ads highlighting the rollback of protections for transgender and nonbinary individuals. One of the ads, aired repeatedly in swing states like Pennsylvania, declared, “Kamala is for them/them. President Trump is for you.”
The second order seeks to eliminate DEI programs within federal agencies, labeling them as "radical" and sources of "preferential treatment." According to an official, “The new administration will prioritize merit and fairness, ensuring government resources are used efficiently and not wasted on divisive initiatives.”
Critics have already raised concerns over the orders, accusing the Trump administration of undermining the rights of marginalized groups. However, the incoming administration defends the policies as necessary to restore clarity and fairness in governance.
These measures align with Trump’s campaign promises to dismantle progressive policies on gender and diversity, a stance that resonated with portions of his voter base.
Speaking about the executive orders, a White House official stated, “This is a government committed to biological truth and fiscal responsibility, which our voters demanded.”
