President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised Nigerians that their sacrifices over the past 19 months will not be in vain, unveiling ambitious plans to combat inflation and foster economic growth.
In his New Year message, Tinubu reassured citizens of brighter prospects, expressing confidence in the country’s potential.
The president pledged to reduce Nigeria's inflation rate from its current 34.6% to 15% by the end of 2025. “We are resolute in our ambition to reduce inflation from its current high to 15%. With diligent work and God’s help, we will achieve this goal and provide relief to all our people,” Tinubu declared.
Stabilizing the Economy
Highlighting achievements over the past year, Tinubu stated that fuel prices have decreased, foreign trade recorded surpluses for three consecutive quarters, foreign reserves increased, and the Naira gained strength against the US dollar. However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly the rising costs of food and essential drugs, which burden many households.
“We will intensify efforts to lower these costs through increased food production and local manufacturing of essential medical supplies,” the president said.
Tinubu announced the upcoming launch of the National Credit Guarantee Company, designed to expand access to credit and strengthen financial systems. “This initiative, in partnership with government institutions, the private sector, and multilateral organizations, will strengthen financial confidence, expand credit access, and support underserved groups such as women and youth,” he explained.
The president emphasized the importance of patriotism and collective values in achieving national goals. “Citizens’ moral rectitude and faith in our country are fundamental to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said, adding that the government would introduce the National Values Charter and a national orientation campaign to foster trust between citizens and the government.
To amplify youth participation, Tinubu announced a Youth Conference in the first quarter of 2025, providing a platform for young Nigerians to contribute to nation-building discussions.
Tinubu urged governors and local council chairpersons to collaborate with the federal government in areas such as agriculture, clean energy, and tax reforms. “Together, we can harness emerging opportunities and move our nation forward,” he stressed.
In his message, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to nation-building, stating, “The New Year will bring us closer to the bright future we all desire and the Nigeria of our dreams. Let us stay the course and remain united.”
He wished Nigerians a prosperous 2025 and called for collective action to achieve the country’s ambitious goals.
Atiku’s Call for Accountability
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also addressed Nigerians, urging them to hold their leaders accountable in 2025. In his New Year message, Atiku emphasized the importance of vigilance in ensuring good governance and protecting liberties.
“This New Year presents an invaluable opportunity to reshape our national dialogue and demand accountability from those in leadership,” Atiku stated. He urged citizens to reject divisive politics and unite in pursuit of collective prosperity.
Atiku expressed gratitude for overcoming the challenges of 2024 and encouraged Nigerians to embrace the possibilities of 2025 with optimism and determination. “The trials of the past year have fortified our faith and strengthened our resolve to build a better future,” he concluded.
