The Ogun State Government has finalized the allocation of 100 hectares of land in Ode-Omi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, for the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard, with Governor Dapo Abiodun waiving all associated fees amounting to billions of naira.
Governor Abiodun, speaking during a visit by the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, at his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta, described the move as a critical step toward enhancing security and economic development in the state.
“In view of the prospective activities in our riverine areas, the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard became imperative. The former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, recognized this and supported our initiative," Abiodun stated.
He revealed that the government had worked closely with the Navy to identify an ideal location for the facility. "After a joint committee's efforts, we allocated 100 hectares of land in Ogun Waterside. All formalities, including the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy, have been completed," he added.
Abiodun emphasized the government's commitment by waiving all fees tied to the allocation. "We waived several billions of naira in charges to ensure this project is realized. This is a testament to our dedication to security and development," he said.
The Governor also assured that the access road to the Naval Base would be ready by the end of the week. "Despite delays caused by rains, significant progress has been made. By week's end, the access road to Ode-Omi will be completed, paving the way for the groundbreaking ceremony," he noted.
Abiodun highlighted the strategic importance of the project, citing Ogun's status as a coastal state with untapped potential. "With Tongeji Island and the Olokola Deep Sea Port, we are well-positioned for economic growth. The prospect of becoming an oil-producing state is high, and this Naval presence will safeguard these opportunities," he remarked.
In response, Rear Admiral Oamen commended the Governor for his unwavering support for the Navy and security agencies in Ogun State. "The Ogun State Governor has demonstrated a deep commitment to the safety of lives and property. The Nigerian Navy will support this effort by ensuring the waterways are secure," Oamen said.
He further assured that the Navy would commence work at the site soon. "The Naval Base is part of the Chief of Naval Staff's strategic plan, and Ogun can count on the Navy's presence to ensure the safety of its maritime areas," he added.
