The Lagos State House of Assembly took a step towards a new chapter as lawmakers reconvened under the leadership of newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.
However, the absence of impeached Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and two key lawmakers, Hon. Noheem Adams and Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, raised eyebrows during the inaugural plenary.
Rt. Hon. Meranda, who was elected following Obasa’s controversial impeachment, focused her address on unifying the Assembly and rebuilding trust among members.
She called for a collective effort to prioritize the interests of Lagosians over past disputes.
“We are turning a new page today,” Meranda stated. “This administration will focus on fostering collaboration, delivering results, and ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach all Lagosians, regardless of gender, education, religion, or ethnicity.”
The session saw lawmakers such as Hon. Bola Shabi, Hon. Desmond Elliot, Hon. Olumoh Lukman, and Hon. Olotu Emmanuel openly pledge allegiance to Meranda’s leadership. Apologizing for missing the impeachment proceedings, they also expressed their willingness to formally support the removal of the former Speaker.
Meranda emphasized the importance of harmony between the legislative and executive arms of government, highlighting the need for mutual respect and cooperation to ensure effective governance. “We must maintain open lines of communication with the executive arm, led by Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to achieve our shared vision for a better Lagos,” she added.
Her address reflected a commitment to healing divisions within the House and avoiding the pitfalls of past controversies. “Our focus is not on past disagreements but on the collective goal of improving the lives of our people and leaving Lagos better than we found it,” she noted.
