Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.
Popularly known as "Ijaya," Onanuga reportedly passed away early Wednesday morning after a brief illness.
Governor Abiodun, in a condolence message, described the death of the lawmaker, who also served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, as a shocking and monumental loss not just to Ogun State but to Nigeria as a whole.
"The passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga is both devastating and sudden. Without mincing words, Ogun State has lost an extraordinary amazon," Abiodun said.
The governor highlighted Onanuga’s remarkable contributions to the political landscape and her dedication to public service. "Her courage was exemplary, and her loyalty to our great party and her constituents was exceptional".
"She was a fearless leader, a loyal party member, and a great mobilizer who championed the advancement of women and the well-being of her constituents until her last days," he stated.
Abiodun also extended his condolences to the House of Representatives, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, and the entire legislative community.
"I sincerely sympathize with the leadership of the House of Representatives and all its members. Her death is a rude shock, and we will miss her dearly. However, we take solace in her immense contributions to humanity and her legacy of service to the people."
The governor prayed for God to grant her eternal rest and to provide her family with the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss. "May God Almighty rest her soul and grant her family the fortitude to endure this great loss," Abiodun concluded.
The late Adewunmi Onanuga was a prominent figure in Ogun State politics and a staunch advocate for women empowerment. Her demise leaves a void that will be deeply felt by her constituents and the nation at large.
