The Federal Government has reacted to recent remarks by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, concerning the administration’s economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Emir’s comments, made at a public event in Lagos, acknowledged the necessity of some reforms while subtly criticizing others.
In a statement issued by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the Federal Government affirmed its commitment to transformative policies aimed at addressing Nigeria’s entrenched economic challenges.
The government, however, expressed disappointment over the Emir’s approach, which it described as undermining collective progress.
“While His Highness, Emir Sanusi II, and indeed any Nigerian, have the right to express their opinions, it is disappointing that a leader from an institution symbolizing forthrightness, fairness, and justice would admit to withholding truth because of personal interests and perceived antagonism,” the statement read.
The government emphasized the necessity of bold actions to secure Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, noting that the current administration has implemented critical reforms despite their temporary pains.
These include the unification of exchange rates, the removal of the fuel subsidy, and strategies to reduce the debt service-to-revenue ratio.
“These reforms, as Emir Sanusi himself acknowledged, are the ‘necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management.’ They are already delivering measurable progress. For instance, unifying exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence and increased foreign reserves, while fuel subsidy removal has freed up resources for infrastructure, education, and healthcare investments,” the Minister stated.
The statement highlighted projections from respected institutions like the World Bank, which predict Nigeria’s GDP is on an upward trajectory, signaling economic recovery.
The Federal Government described the reforms as globally recognized steps toward economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
The government also urged Emir Sanusi to rise above personal grievances and contribute constructively to the country’s progress. “Given his economic expertise, His Highness has a unique responsibility to foster public trust and collaboration rather than indulge in partisan rhetoric. Nigeria’s rebuilding requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders,” the statement added.
Addressing concerns raised by the Emir, the government reaffirmed its openness to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders but insisted on putting the nation’s interests above all else.
“President Tinubu’s administration remains steadfast in its mission to deliver renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all. This is a pivotal moment for our country; divisive narratives must give way to collective efforts for progress,” it concluded.
The statement further appealed to Nigerians, including esteemed leaders, to prioritize national unity over distractions and assured citizens that the administration’s policies are designed to ensure sustainable development and inclusivity for future generations.
