Court Awards N150,000 in Damages Against Woman for Not Visiting Boyfriend After Receiving Fare

A Magistrate Court in Ilesa, Osun State, has directed a woman, Rhoda Adu, to pay a total of N150,000 in damages to her boyfriend, Olapitan Sola, after she failed to honor an agreement to visit him despite receiving N3,000 for transportation.

Mr. Olapitan, feeling defrauded and emotionally distressed, reported the incident to the Ayeso Police Station after Ms. Adu received the transportation money, switched off her phone, and failed to show up as planned.

In the court proceedings, evidence submitted included the N3,000 transfer receipt and WhatsApp conversations between the two, which confirmed the agreement and her subsequent breach.

Delivering the judgment, Magistrate Akogun Oludare ordered Ms. Adu to refund the N3,000 transport fare and pay an additional N100,000 for breaching their agreement. Furthermore, she was fined an additional N50,000 as special damages for the emotional distress caused to Mr. Olapitan.

“This court finds the defendant’s actions not only deceitful but also damaging to the plaintiff’s emotional well-being,” Magistrate Oludare remarked. “The ruling is also meant to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar dishonest conduct.”
