Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Abiodun Urges Nigerians to Foster Unity, Peace

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on Nigerians to unite in building a nation where peace and unity triumph over division and conflict. 

He made the appeal during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Special Church Service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta.

Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun emphasized the need to preserve the legacies of fallen heroes who fought to protect Nigeria's territorial integrity. 

“Today, let us pledge to honour their memory not only with ceremonies but with actions. Let us build a Nigeria where unity prevails over division, where peace silences the echoes of conflict, and where the sacrifices of our heroes inspire us to serve one another selflessly,” he stated.

The Governor highlighted that the responsibility of supporting the families of fallen heroes should not rest solely on the Nigeria Legion. Instead, he described it as a collective duty for all Nigerians. 

“The Legion has continued to ensure that the families of our fallen heroes are well cared for. However, this responsibility should not rest solely on their shoulders. It must be seen as a collective duty, a debt we all owe in honour of the memory of our departed men and women,” he added.

Governor Abiodun urged Nigerians to recognize the sacrifices of the armed forces as part of the nation's history and consciousness. “Their legacies must remain alive, enshrined in the heart of our nation's history and the fabric of our collective consciousness,” he said.

Reflecting on the significance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Governor noted, “This is not just a day in the calendar. It is a sacred moment to reflect on the sacrifices of our fallen heroes and recommit ourselves to the ideals for which they stood. They faced life-threatening situations to ensure that the dreams of millions of Nigerians were not extinguished.”

He paid tribute to the families of the fallen heroes, referring to them as unsung heroes who have endured the pain of loss with unyielding grace. “Their blood, sweat, and tears have sown the seed of hope, peace, and national pride,” he remarked.

Governor Abiodun also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies and implementing measures that will enhance economic growth for the benefit of all citizens and residents.

In his sermon, the Bishop of Egba Diocese, Rt. Rev'd Emmanuel Akinrodoye of the African Church, urged Nigerians to appreciate God’s benevolence despite the country’s challenges. He stressed that acknowledging God’s grace is a pathway to national healing.

“It is imperative for Nigerians to remain prayerful, steadfast in faith, and united. We must extend hands of fellowship by using our gifts and resources to uplift others,” the bishop said.

He also called on the government to provide adequate resources for security agencies to combat insurgency and urged Nigerians to show love and support to security personnel and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s peace.

Prayers were offered for the peace of the nation, Ogun State, the Governor, and families of fallen heroes. Governor Abiodun also participated by reading from the book of Ephesians 2:1-10 during the service.
