Stampede: Ogun Governor Visits Makinde, Calls for NGO-Government Partnership in Palliatives Sharing

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), charitable groups, and individuals distributing palliative aid to collaborate with government agencies to prevent chaotic situations that could result in loss of lives.

Governor Abiodun made this appeal during a condolence visit to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan, following last week's stampede in the city that claimed the lives of 35 people.

Speaking during the visit, Abiodun expressed sadness over the tragedy, describing it as a preventable incident. He emphasized the importance of proper coordination in palliative distribution to avoid such mishaps.

“I am here on behalf of myself, the government, and the good people of Ogun State, as well as the Southern Governors' Forum, to commiserate with Governor Makinde and the people of Oyo State over the unfortunate incident that occurred on December 18. A well-meaning initiative to share joy during the yuletide turned into a tragedy, leading to the loss of 35 lives,” Abiodun said.

He added, “We’ve seen similar incidents in Anambra and Abuja this season. These unfortunate trends underscore the need for private sector players, NGOs, and charities to partner with the government on such initiatives. Governments have the structures and expertise to organize these programs safely and efficiently. This collaboration is critical to preventing future occurrences.”

The governor noted that the Southern Governors' Forum was deeply pained by the incident, describing it as a collective loss. As the Chairman of the Forum, he affirmed that his visit was to express solidarity and share in Oyo State's grief.

“As a neighboring state, we share in your pain. Anything that affects Oyo State affects Ogun State. On behalf of the Forum, I condole with the families of the victims and pray for the repose of their souls. We also pray for strength for the families to bear this irreparable loss,” he stated.

Governor Abiodun also extended his goodwill for the festive season, wishing Oyo State residents a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

In his response, Governor Seyi Makinde thanked Abiodun for the condolence visit and described it as a gesture that reflects the unity between the two states.

“This visit provides an opportunity for us to exchange ideas that can benefit both Ogun and Oyo States. We are two sister states with shared challenges and opportunities,” Makinde said.

He disclosed plans for a Peer Review meeting in the coming year, where both states will assess their programs and learn from each other’s experiences.

Makinde added, “Through collaboration, we can enhance governance and ensure better outcomes for our people.”
