The House of Representatives has announced its intention to present a total of N704.91 million, generated from a six-month salary cut, to President Tinubu on December 31, 2024. The fund is aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians impacted by economic challenges, particularly those caused by the removal of fuel subsidy.
During Thursday's plenary session, Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for their contributions. He stated, "If you recall, about five months ago, we resolved to donate half of our salaries for six months to help address the pressing needs of Nigerians. I am pleased to inform you that we have raised a total of N704,907,578.82. On December 31, I will lead a delegation to present this money to President Tinubu for the exclusive use of vulnerable Nigerians."
The decision to slash 50% of their salaries was reached on July 18, 2024, following a motion presented by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, during a plenary session. The motion called for sacrifices from public officials to address the growing hardship faced by citizens.
In his motion, Kalu emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, "This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to solve the challenges this country faces. I appeal to my colleagues to sacrifice 50% of our monthly salaries for six months to help alleviate hunger among Nigerians." He further added, "Our monthly salary is N600,000, and this sacrifice demonstrates our commitment to easing the burden on ordinary citizens."
The Speaker commended the lawmakers for their solidarity and willingness to make financial sacrifices for the common good. He noted, "Your contributions highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members of this House to addressing critical issues affecting Nigerians."
