A fuel-laden tanker exploded in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area in Ondo State, on Saturday evening. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 PM in the Soka area of the town, caused widespread panic and disruption.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker veered off the road and plunged into a nearby ditch, where it immediately caught fire. The blaze resulted in thick smoke that enveloped the area, severely reducing visibility and leading to heavy traffic congestion.
Samuel Ibitoye, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ondo State, confirmed the explosion in a telephone conversation with Channels Television. He assured that no fatalities had been recorded as a result of the fire, though the situation caused significant alarm among residents.
In related news, another tragedy occurred in the same community earlier this week. On Thursday, an auto crash involving three police officers and one suspect led to their deaths.
The crash, caused by an overspeeding trailer driver, happened when the driver lost control, crossed the median, and collided with a police van carrying the officers and the suspect.
Eyewitnesses stated that the officers, part of the Monitoring Unit of the Ondo State Police Command, were traveling from Akure to make an arrest in Ore when the accident occurred. While three officers and one suspect died, another officer sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, described the incident as "unfortunate" and extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers. She confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
The bodies of the police officers who died in the crash have been deposited in a mortuary in Ore.
