Trigger-Happy Officer Ends Woman’s Life in Ekiti

A middle-aged woman, identified as Ifeoluwa Adekale, was fatally shot by a police officer in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Thursday evening. The tragic incident occurred in front of a police station in the Okeila area of the state capital.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the yet-to-be-named officer was celebrating the promotion of a colleague at the station when his rifle discharged, striking the victim who was standing across the road near a salon.

According to an eyewitness, “The young woman was across the road in front of a salon when the gun of one of the officers accidentally discharged and hit her. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly could not survive the injury.”

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Adeniran Akinwale, who was recently promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), confirmed the incident. Describing the occurrence as “a very sad and unfortunate situation,” Akinwale said the officer involved had been disarmed and detained pending further investigation.

He added, “The officer involved in this unfortunate incident has been locked up in a cell for the necessary room trial and will soon be prosecuted accordingly. I want to encourage the family of the deceased to take heart and sympathize with them during this difficult time.”

Akinwale also assured the public that justice would be served in the matter, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate any actions that put civilian lives at risk.
