Tragedy struck in the Akute area of Ogun State on Friday morning when a man was electrocuted while allegedly trying to vandalize a power transformer.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. She disclosed that the man had climbed into the transformer house and was electrocuted while trying to cut a wire.
“At about 10:20 am on Friday, the chairman of the Irewole community, Mr. Rasheed Ajagbe, reported to the station that the community had been grappling with theft and damage to electrical wires.
He said he received a call earlier that morning asking him to inspect the transformer. On arrival with other community executives, they discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man who had apparently died while attempting to vandalize the installation,” Odutola stated.
A team of detectives was dispatched to the scene for a preliminary investigation. “We visited the site to gather evidence and take photographs. The IBEDC office was informed, and the corpse was transported to the General Hospital Ifo mortuary for autopsy and preservation,” Odutola added.
The police urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity around public infrastructure to prevent similar incidents.
