Yuletide: Abiodun Urges New Police Commissioner to Bolster Security

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged security agencies to implement effective strategies to safeguard lives and property during the festive season.

The governor made the call during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Highlighting the unique security challenges posed by the season, Abiodun commended the efforts of security operatives in maintaining peace but warned of potential threats from criminal elements.

“As we approach the yuletide period, we all know that this period comes with its challenges. Those who are bent on carrying out nefarious activities, the get-rich-quick schemes, will also get a bit desperate,” the governor said. “I want to admonish you to design strategies to ensure this yuletide period is peaceful for everyone, allowing us to celebrate without worrying about the breakdown of law and order.”

The governor also emphasized the need for inter-agency collaboration and continuity in supporting security efforts. “I want to enjoin your colleagues to please join hands with you the way they had cooperated with your predecessor so that together we can continue to build the future of Ogun State to achieve the future of our dreams,” he added.

Abiodun described Ogun’s strategic location, sharing borders with four states and an international boundary, as a factor contributing to security concerns. He acknowledged his administration’s initiatives, including revamping the State Security Trust Fund, which has equipped security agencies with modern tools, resulting in Ogun being ranked among the most peaceful states in Nigeria.

“Like they say, you cannot have any socio-economic development in an atmosphere of insecurity. You can build all the roads, all the airports and seaports, but if there is even a perception of insecurity, nobody will come to that State,” Abiodun stated.

Commending the Inspector General of Police for Ogunlowo’s deployment and the provision of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), Abiodun expressed confidence in the new CP’s abilities. “I want to thank the Inspector General of Police who has found you worthy of this deployment. Ogun State is known for exporting human capital, and he is one of those we exported to the federal government,” the governor said.

The governor assured that his administration would continue supporting security agencies to maintain peace across the state.

Ogun CP Ogunlowo Assures Proactive Security Measures

In his remarks, the new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, pledged to build on existing security frameworks, emphasizing the need for community cooperation and inter-agency collaboration.

“I had the privilege of working in the tactical intelligence unit of the Nigeria Police Force in the past, and I have a good understanding of the situation regarding cultism,” Ogunlowo noted. “With the logistics approved by the Inspector General of Police, including APCs, we will address this issue decisively.”

The CP further outlined plans to engage stakeholders and ensure public safety during the festive period. “We will do all that is needed to address this issue, especially at a time like this. We will engage all stakeholders; we know we can’t do it alone, but we’ve got the wherewithal to deal with it,” he assured.

Ogunlowo urged citizens to support law enforcement efforts, stating, “Let’s enjoy the season, let’s be careful, let’s respect the rights of others. We want peace; criminals should stay away and let the people of Ogun State enjoy the moment. We will be on the ground for that.”
