President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian football stars Ademola Lookman and Chiamaka Nnadozie, alongside the Super Falcons, for their outstanding victories at the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.
The ceremony, held on Monday night at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco, saw Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman win the CAF Men’s African Footballer of the Year title, while Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was named the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year. The Super Falcons also clinched the award for CAF Women’s National Team of the Year.
In a statement issued late Monday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the athletes for their exceptional performances and for bringing pride to Nigeria.
“These athletes embody the essential Nigerian spirit. They signpost the best in us as a nation. Let no one ever write us off. I am incredibly proud of them. Thank you for making Nigeria proud and keeping our flag flying,” Tinubu said.
The President also emphasized the significance of the awards, noting that the recognition by Africa’s highest football authority serves as a source of inspiration for young and upcoming athletes across Nigeria.
“This recognition by CAF will inspire other young athletes to pursue their dreams with focus and determination. Their discipline, hard work, and resilience reflect the spirit of a greater Nigeria, where everyone thrives and succeeds,” Tinubu added.
The President further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sports and youth development.
“Thank you for winning medals for Nigeria, both at home and abroad. You will win more in the future, and we will continue to support you every step of the way,” he concluded.
The CAF Awards ceremony celebrated Africa’s finest football talents, highlighting Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage. Ademola Lookman, whose stellar performances throughout the year earned him the prestigious men’s title, expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their unwavering support. Similarly, Chiamaka Nnadozie’s heroic contributions in goal for the Super Falcons were pivotal in the team’s success, leading to their collective recognition as the Women’s National Team of the Year.
