At least one person has died and another sustained serious injuries in two separate accidents along the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu-Benin Expressways on Tuesday.
According to Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, the incidents occurred along the Sagamu corridor of these highways, one at approximately 1:30 am and the other in the afternoon.
In the first incident, a Dyna Pickup truck with registration number LSD 601 YK collided with a parked Mack truck (APP 524 XE) on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, opposite Witech Roofing and Pipes Company. The driver of the pickup, identified as Wale Eyinola, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while traveling from Lagos to Ibadan. The collision left Eyinola critically injured, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
"The driver of the Dyna pickup truck sustained severe injuries and was confirmed dead after being taken to a nearby hospital," Odutola confirmed. She added that both vehicles were towed to the Motor Traffic Division office in Sagamu for further inspection and investigation by the Vehicle Inspection Office.
Meanwhile, a second crash occurred on the Sagamu-Benin/Ijebu-Ode Expressway near Atunrase Slope in the afternoon. The driver, identified as Isa, was traveling in a Scania truck (BEN 234 YL) when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and block the entire expressway. Isa sustained serious injuries and was promptly taken to Idera Private Hospital in Sagamu for treatment.
Odutola noted that both accidents are being investigated by the Sagamu Police Division. "We are working to understand the causes of these incidents and to prevent further accidents along these roads," she said.
The police spokesperson also urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition, especially during the busy holiday season. "Motorists should take extra care on the roads and ensure they drive safely to avoid similar accidents," Odutola advised.
