As the world unites on December 5, 2024, to mark International Volunteer Day (IVD), the spotlight shines on the immense contributions of volunteers across the globe. This annual event, celebrated under the theme "Empowering Inclusion, Ensuring Equality," highlights the transformative power of selfless service in shaping communities and fostering a better world.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his address, lauded volunteers for their tireless efforts, emphasizing their critical role in driving social change. "Volunteers embody the best of humanity," Guterres remarked. "On this important day, let's draw inspiration from their example and resolve to do our part to help shape a better world for all."

In Nigeria, the culture of volunteering remains a work in progress, yet optimism prevails. Abiodun Oladimeji Lasile, Founder and Coordinator of The SixthSense Initiative, reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to advancing volunteerism. "Our mission is to mobilize, train, and equip Nigerians with the tools needed to cultivate a habit of love and service for others," Lasile said. "Through time, resources, and awareness campaigns, we aim to demonstrate the profound benefits of volunteering—not just for individuals but for society at large."

Volunteering, as experts suggest, offers a range of benefits. Beyond fostering social connections and personal growth, it provides avenues for skill acquisition, career advancement, and emotional fulfillment. “When we give selflessly, we not only solve pressing challenges but also build happier, healthier, and more inclusive communities,” Lasile added.

As part of the day’s call to action, Nigerians are urged to embrace volunteerism as a means of addressing key societal challenges. By breaking down barriers, promoting accessible education and healthcare, and ensuring equal rights and opportunities, volunteers can play a pivotal role in building a sustainable and equitable future.

In a heartfelt appeal to Nigerians, Lasile emphasized the essence of unity and selflessness. "Let us be our brother's keeper through selfless service and volunteering," he urged. "Together, we can create a better society, one that is driven by genuine leadership committed to humanity."

As the world celebrates International Volunteer Day 2024, the message is clear: every act of service counts. It is a day to honor those who give their time and energy to uplift others and to inspire individuals to join the movement toward creating a brighter future for all.
