Indian Police Arrest Nigerian Man for Marriage Scam Worth N9m

A Nigerian man, identified as Johnson, has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly defrauding an Indian woman from Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, under the pretext of marriage. The suspect reportedly lured the victim through a fake matrimonial profile and swindled her of over N9 million (lakhs of rupees).

According to the Rajnandgaon police, Johnson had promised marriage to the woman, gaining her trust before manipulating her into transferring large sums of money.

The authorities further disclosed that the accused had been living in Delhi unlawfully after his visa and passport had expired. “Johnson was operating in secrecy, evading immigration checks while continuing his fraudulent activities,” a police official stated.

The arrest was made after thorough investigations and coordination between the Rajnandgaon police and their Delhi counterparts. “This case highlights the growing concerns around matrimonial scams, where victims are targeted under emotional and financial manipulation,” the police added.

Johnson is now in police custody, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover if he was part of a larger network involved in similar scams.

Authorities have advised the public, particularly individuals using online matrimonial platforms, to remain cautious and verify profiles thoroughly before establishing trust.
