A devastating fire incident in the Ori-Eru, Idikan area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of a husband, his wife, and their grandson.

The tragedy, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, engulfed the upper floor of a six-room residential storey building.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Yemi Akinyinka, disclosed that the agency received a distress call at 3:46 am from a resident, identified as Hassan, prompting an immediate response.

“Upon arrival, our personnel found the upper floor of the building in flames. We swiftly took action and succeeded in extinguishing the fire completely,” Akinyinka said.

He confirmed the loss of three lives in the fire but noted that five other occupants were rescued alive. "We also managed to save the ground floor and neighboring properties from the inferno," he added.

Providing further insight into the incident, Akinyinka revealed that the fire was caused by the use of a naked flame, which the victims employed to keep warm during the cold weather. “Unfortunately, they fell asleep, and the flame led to the disaster,” he explained.

Law enforcement officers, including a team of policemen led by CSP Olaniyan Jibola from Mapo Division and operatives of Amotekun Corps led by Gbenga Akinyemi, were present at the scene to ensure order and assist in rescue efforts.
