The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced plans to install CCTV surveillance systems along the 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. This initiative is aimed at improving security and ensuring smooth traffic flow along the critical route.
The highway, currently being developed by Hitech Construction Company Ltd, will be equipped with advanced monitoring systems and additional safety measures.
During an inspection of Sections I and II of the highway in Lagos on December 20, 2024, Senator Umahi highlighted the importance of the upgrades. “We’re going to plant trees and also include lay-bys. Every five kilometers, we will have lay-bys with CCTV cameras to monitor the route effectively,” he stated.
The Minister further explained that these enhancements would include the installation of portable cabins every few kilometers. “We’ll station vehicles and security personnel at these cabins to ensure a response time of about 10 minutes,” he added. The initiative will mirror the successful approach used on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, which has seen improved security measures.
The CCTV system, powered by solar energy, will ensure continuous surveillance over the entire stretch of the highway, from Lagos to Calabar. "There will be no road obstructions, and we’ll establish viewing centers to monitor the road in both directions,” Umahi emphasized.
