Children Feared Dead in Oyo Carnival Stampede

A tragic stampede at a children’s carnival held at Basorun Islamic High School, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday has reportedly claimed the lives of several children, with unconfirmed reports putting the death toll at about 30.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday. According to Oyelade, the carnival was a private event, and the state government was not involved in its organisation.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the tragic incident that occurred at Basorun Islamic High School during a private children’s funfair. The state government immediately mobilised a rapid response team to manage the situation and provide assistance,” Oyelade said.

He added that the victims were promptly evacuated to medical facilities across Ibadan, including Patnas Hospital, Western Hospital, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, and the University College Hospital.

“We commend the swift intervention of the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, who activated emergency response teams to assist at the scene,” Oyelade noted.

While awaiting a detailed report from the Commissioner of Police, Oyelade emphasized the need for proper coordination in events involving vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

“Parents who are concerned about the whereabouts of their children should visit the medical facilities where victims have been taken. A valid means of identification will be required,” he advised.

The statement also noted that the government was deeply sympathetic to the affected families. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urge the public to remain calm while investigations continue. The government will do everything possible to support the victims during this challenging time,” Oyelade stated.

The Commissioner reiterated that the state government was not involved in the planning or provision of logistics for the event, stressing the importance of meticulous preparation for events of this scale.
