Agidigbo FM Condoles Families Over Oyo Stampede, Clarifies Role

The management of Agidigbo FM, Ibadan, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede that claimed lives during a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Oyo State.

The station has also clarified its involvement, stating that it served solely as a media partner for the event, which was organized by WINGS Foundation.

In a press statement signed by the Director of Programmes, Olayinka AbdulWahab, on Wednesday, the station expressed condolences to the affected families.

“We received the news of the tragedy that occurred at the children’s funfair with great shock. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The station emphasized that contrary to circulating claims, Agidigbo FM was not the event organizer.

“Agidigbo FM only provided media support to promote the event. We were not involved in the organization or execution of the funfair,” AbdulWahab clarified.

Highlighting their immediate response to the unfolding crisis, the station stated, “Upon learning that a large crowd had gathered at the venue by 5 a.m., we utilized our platform to broadcast public service announcements and jingles, urging people to avoid the venue to prevent further overcrowding.”

Acknowledging the efforts of the organizers, the statement noted, “WINGS Foundation took measures to mitigate the situation by deploying security personnel, medical teams, and other emergency responders to manage the incident and assist the victims.”

Calling for restraint in the dissemination of information, the station warned against the spread of unverified claims. “We urge the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. This is not the time for false narratives. Instead, let us unite in praying for the swift recovery of those hospitalized and offer our heartfelt sympathies to the families who lost loved ones,” the statement concluded.

Earlier reports indicated that several children lost their lives during a stampede at the funfair, though the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed.
